Saint George's Day in Catalonia

Hard to understand for those who have never experienced it, Saint George's Day is a popular festive day when book and rose stalls, and, above all, floods of people, take over the streets of all Catalan towns and villages. The celebration could not be simpler: the ritual consists of going for a walk and buying a rose, a book or both to give to loved ones, family members and friends. Although it is not a public holiday, the day and the essential walk fill the streets and squares, making it a unique national festival celebrated on a working day.
The origin of this unusual festival can be found in a mixture of traditions and customs from different periods. The fact that Saint George (Sant Jordi) is the patron saint of Catalonia (officially since 1456, although he was being venerated as early as the 8th century) coincides with another medieval custom of celebrating a Rose Fair or "Lovers' Fair" at the Palau de la Generalitat.
To these more traditional celebrations was added Book Day, established throughout Spain in 1926. The literary celebration ended up mixing with the Catalan traditions to create a special day which has won widespread public support.

Certificats:
EOI    nivell intermedi                       (B1 / PET)
EOI    nivell avançat                           (B2 / First Certificate FCE)

Self confidence/self esteem/ shyness

It's normal to be a bit shy or have a low self esteem but if wish you were a little more confident, get some handy tips here on coming out of your shell...

Am I shy?

Bashful, reticent, self-conscious, sheepish, timid, wary

Am I shy?

Do you feel nervous when you're:
  • With people you don't know very well (specially of the opposite sex)
  • At parties
  • Meeting new people for the first time
  • Talking to strangers
  • Talking to people in authority, like teachers or policemen

Do you find it hard to
  • Look people in the eye
  • Ask people for information
  • Think of things to say when you're in a group
  • Act natural with new people
  • Give my opinion or assert yourself

Did you answer 'yes' to over half the questions?

Then you may well be shy

Shyness is very common. About 40% of us would describe ourselves this way.
It's only a problem if shyness stops us doing stuff we want to. Like getting ourselves noticed or achieving our potential.

Why are people shy?

Sometimes we are born timid. Maybe it's in our genes. Plus we're all told not to show off or talk to strangers.
For others, we become shy because we've experienced things that make us wary. Maybe we've been rejected, ridiculed or ignored. Our self-esteem gets lowered, so we start to avoid the thing that made us feel bad like social contact with other people. Then it becomes a habit.

What's the problem with being shy?

Shy people are often loyal, thoughtful, conscientious - great friends. Imagine the world if everyone was pushy and loud. So there's no problem being shy - if we're happy.

But shy people can be lonely and isolated. Or end up being sidestepped, not getting asked out, not getting that pay rise or that uni place. They can almost always settle for second best.

How can I stop being so shy?

It's not rocket science. If we want to be good with people, we need to practice. That's it.

Go easy on yourself. You wouldn't expect to pass GCSE Maths without working at it. No one becomes a dazzlingly popular, assertive person overnight.

So start slow. Find a bunch of friends or family. Then make sure you get a word in edgeways. Next, try asking a question at the end of a lesson or even putting your hand up in class. Wait till you're confident here before taking the plunge with strangers. Try asking people about themselves. Get them talking. This takes the pressure off you.

You can do this. If you suffer knock-backs, pick yourself up and try again. No one gets it perfect every time.

Most important: be happy with yourself. Your own approval is more important than anyone else's. So write that list of all the things you're good at. Mine starts with "knowing all the Number Ones from 2001? The cheesier the better.

Traditions

Father's Day is a celebration honoring fathers and celebrating fatherhood, paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society. Many countries celebrate it on the third Sunday of June (eg. United Kingdom), but it is also celebrated widely on other days. In Spain it is observed on the Feast day of Saint Joseph, which is March 19.
Nowadays it is a commercial celebration.
In Catalonia it's typical to eat "Crema de Sant Josep" for dessert.

MINI SAGAS

What is a mini saga?
A mini saga is a piece of writing which has exactly fifty words, not including the title, which can have up to fifteen words. A mini saga has to tell a story and have a beginning, middle and end. It cannot just be a description of something.
The first mini sagas appeared in 1982 in The Sunday Telegraph, an English newspaper. The Sunday Telegraph announced the idea of the mini saga and held a competition for the best ones.

An unexpected ending

MINI SAGA- Going down without elevators
I knew that day was special, but at first it seemed to be ordinary. Then someone started screaming some floors above me. I thought it was only a spider but then I saw it.
An enormous plane was coming straight to us. That image was engraved on my eyes forever.

"A DAY IN LONDON":
I was in London in the middle of a crowded street. Suddenly a man attacked me and ran away. Then I realised that I didn't have my wallet and I ran after him. After a minute of running, a man shouted "Cut".
It was a film shooting and my wallet was in the other pocket!!

A TRUE STORY
"A few years ago, I visited Paris. I decided to take a boat through the Seine. I was enjoying the views when suddenly my phone rang. It was Blanca and she told me to turn around. I looked back and... there she was, waving at me from a bridge. What a coincidence! Unbelievable!"

Tonight is Charlie’s birthday.
He’s drinking from his bottle,
But now he’s only puking all the vodka.
He feels so hot, he feels so great, better than the rest,
He is the best, f*** the others,
If he wants he will get the seven digits from your mother for a dollar tomorrow!
